The study will research into the application of social, or 2.0, web technologies to the social construction of public space, developing concepts such as: 1/ public space as operative system; 2/ public space as active node of the information and communication networks; 3/ public space as interface; 4/ public space as civic electromagnetic space; 5/ public space as civic media ecology; 6/ public space as wikiplaza (participatory networked construction).
The research will focus on the development of a matrix of uses/ activities implementing the former concepts, to be developed applying free software resources and principles.
The matrix will be first deployed in a prototype that the research team will build in Paris, France, in May 2009, within an international event dedicated to urban digital culture. It will be conceptualized and designed to allow for future applications in public spaces, educational and cultural centers in Andalucia, with the potential to develop civic territorial networks of connected public spaces.

CONTRACT FOR THE RESEARCH, PROJECT AND WORKS MANAGEMENT OF THE RESTORATION OF THE CHAPTER ROOM OF SEVILLE’S CASA CONSISTORIAL [TOWN HALL]

Aim of the contract:

The research and Restoration Project have been commissioned by the Foundation of the Real Alcázar and the Casa Consistorial of Seville. The construction of the building began in 1527, following the project of Diego de Riaño who was Master Builder until November 1534. The lower Chapter Room is enclosed with a vault, on which construction began towards the end of 1534, and which constitutes an extraordinary architectural piece from the first half of the sixteenth century. It is a very low basket-handle vault, embellished with ribbing forming an orthogonal mesh, with “twisted” diagonal ribs. It is incredibly prodigious and modern, a result of the implementation of new humanistic currents and the political and economic trade being experienced by the city at the time.
In the last decade pieces of stone became detached from the vault, prompting the installation of a protective mesh which remains in place to date. As a result of the detachment of fragments of stone from ribs and sculptures, a study of the vault was commissioned with architectural, historic, structural, petrogrMARPHic research and a study of the stone’s coating and polychromy, with a view to the final drafting of a restoration project and the execution of the works management.

CONTRACT FOR RESEARCH AND RESTORATION PROJECT FOR THE RENAISSANCE ENSEMBLE OF THE STAIRCASE AND VAULTS OF THE CASA CONSISTORIAL OF SEVILLE

Aim of the contract:

The research and Restoration Project of the renaissance ensemble of the stair and vaults is commissioned by the Foundation for the Real Alcázar and the Casa Consistorial of Seville.
The magnificent renaissance ensemble of the staircase of the Casa Consistorial is the vertical communication nucleus of the chapter rooms of this unique building, nerve centre of Seville’s government for the last 451 years. This building constitutes an extraordinary example of sixteenth-century architecture; it comprises three unique vaults: the coffered vault on the ground floor, the incredible dome of the renaissance staircase which constituted a clear advance in both purely artistic and technical terms, with the superimposition of three structures, and the ribbed vault of the San Fernando vestibule on the top floor.
Over the last few decades fragments of stone have become detached from the vaults, prompting the installation of catchment meshes which at present are still in place. Furthermore, some voussoirs are unstable.
As a result of the detachment of some stone fragments from the vaults, as well as the instability of some voussoirs, a study of the ensemble has been commissioned, with an architectural, historical, structural and petrogrMARPHic investigation and a study of the stone coatings and polychromy, for the final drafting of the restoration project.
